Conceived in 1960, Beyond The Fringe combined the best of the Cambridge Footlights and the Oxford Revue, putting them together in a show that was first performed at the Edinburgh International Festival. It received a lukewarm reception in Edinburgh but fortunately the performers persevered and were rewarded when a London show was critically acclaimed. That in turn led to inviations to take the show over the atlantic and even greater success, ensuring the individual players became an international sensation.
