This story first came to the big screen as a hit movie in the 1950's, starring Colin Peterson as Smiley, Charles 'Bud' Tingwell as the school headmaster and Chips Rafferty as the police sergeant.

Based on the novels by Moore Raymond, John Watson’s adaptation for the stage is also set in a small Australian country town in the late 1940s and follows the (mis)adventures of Smiley, a boy who just couldn’t stay out of trouble!

The musical includes Clyde Collins' hit of 1956 "A Little Boy Called Smiley" and a dozen original songs from contemporary composers David Cocker, Mark Jones and Lance Strauss. They range from bush folk, 40s swing and country blues to romantic pop ballads.
