Classical singers have been singing musical theatre since before the genre as we know it emerged, going back to its roots in operetta. Many well-known classical artists have performed and recorded musical theatre. A very partial list, and by no means comprehensive, might include Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Eileen Farrell, Renee Fleming, Jerry Hadley, Thomas Hampson, Marilyn Horne, etc. This sampling of artists proves that there is not one specific classical voice type suited to singing musical theatre. Like opera, the genre accomodates a variety of vocal talents.
